Join a Local or Online Recovery Group

Trying to help get during the holidays can be lonely, but it doesn’t have to be.

Today, groups such as Alcohol Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA) provide resources and meetings for those in recovery. Both in-person and online sessions are available.

Social media groups are also available to connect with those locally who share common interests and recovery.

Find a Hobby

Cravings tend to be a reason people relapse, and finding a hobby to take your mind off those cravings can help tremendously.

Getting into a hobby can relieve stress, achieve goals, and connect with others with similar interests. For instance, joining an archery club near you can help you focus while having fun.

Exercise

More people tend to be indoors during the Fall due to cold weather or snow, depending on location. In Florida, that is not the case, and many people enjoy the outdoors while getting their daily exercise.

study from 2010 showed that exercise for recovery does help, stating:

“The completion rate of the participants during the training period was on average 52%, which is considered as a success in treatments with drug abusers, usually characterized by a low compliance and commitment. The results of the participants who completed the programme (n = 20) showed an increased oxygen uptake of an average of 10%, improved self-reported quality of life and a higher energy level for the majority of the participants. The [participants] obtained a better body image, became more sensitive to physical pain and disorders and reduced their drug intake during the training period. The long-term effect showed that five of the 20 abusers interviewed reported that they still had not taken drugs, 10 had downgraded their intake, four experienced no change at all and one died through an overdose.”

The study concluded that the exercise did help, but consistency and change in behavior are factors to stay in recovery.

Whether it’s weightlifting, running, cycling, yoga—choose an activity, and stick with it!
